This PowerPoint presentation provides the necessary information for years 10-11 to plan and complete their speaking and listening assessment. This PowerPoint is aimed at the EDUQAS spec, but could be very easily amended if the criteria were changed for a different specification.
I use this presentation as an introduction to S&L and then let the students complete research on the computer to start creating their presentations. With my classes, I find it is very helpful to print this PowerPoint for them so that they have a reference / guide to help them throughout the planning of their S&L presentation.
This PowerPoint includes:
- an overview of what the students are expected to present
- what the students can use to support them during their presentations
- criteria from the EDUQAS mark scheme
- FAQs
This is a PPT which explains the Speaking and Listening criteria and contains multiple tasks suited to the individual student to try before creating their own speeches. The SOW is designed to last approximately two weeks which can be taught that the same time as other units. The lessons can be stand alone or taught across a term.
2 x image files - Speaking/Oracy/Listening Guidelines and Openers which can be printed, used in lessons, on slides, or to create posters and displays.
An image file featuring ‘Effective Talk’, ‘Effective Listening’ and ‘Speaking Appropriately’.
An image file featuring sentence openers for Agreeing, Building and Challenging (ABC Talk) so students have some scaffolding for effective discussion and debate.
The colours of these can be very easily changed in most software!
This game can be used for ESOL learners to practice their speaking and listening in a fun way. It is similar to snakes and ladders. You use a dice and a board and play in teams. You can print this sheet out and laminate it if you like to keep it clean and readily available for repeated use. I have left it in a Word document so that you can edit it and change some of the topics to make it relevant to what you are teaching.
Start Listening A and B are excellent for those pupils with poor auditory and concentration skills. The differentiated tasks suit a range of abilities. The activities are carefully structured, enabling those who find listening difficult to develop their confidence and listening skills. This book involves colouring and drawing to instruction, and identifying whether or not sentences are reasonable. A further book is available: book B uses sentences and stories to focus on auditory memory. Previously sold through Easylearn.
Engaging Communication and Teamwork Activity – Origami Instructions Challenge
This tried-and-tested activity has been a consistent favourite across a wide range of ages and abilities. Now updated with a fresh, user-friendly design, it’s perfect for developing essential communication and teamwork skills in a fun, hands-on way.
How it works:
Learners work in pairs or small groups. One learner takes on the role of the instructor, describing step-by-step how to fold an origami shape using only verbal instructions. The other learner(s), the makers, must follow these directions without seeing the original design. The catch? They don’t know what they’re making until the very end!
This setup challenges learners to think carefully about how they give and receive instructions, encouraging clarity, active listening, and patience. After the activity, groups reflect on their experience and discuss what worked well and what could be improved—perfect for reinforcing communication strategies.
What you’ll need:
Square paper for each participant
Origami instructions (I recommend laminating them for durability and repeated use)
Why you’ll love it:
Encourages speaking, listening, and critical thinking
Builds teamwork, problem-solving, and trust
Flexible time frame – swap roles so everyone gets a turn
Easy to set up and adaptable to any group size
Let your learners take the lead and enjoy the laughter and learning that follows. If you try this resource in your classroom, I’d love to hear how it went—please consider leaving a review!

A helpful guide to the Spoken Language component of the GCSE English Language qualification. The starter exercise on page 1 assists students in not only identifying a suitable topic, but also distinguishing between ‘challenging’ topics and those of a more simplistic kind.
Page 2 then introduces some of the most important criteria by which presentations are assessed and an example presentation is provided (in video form) together with a tick-sheet that students can use to gauge the success of the student exemplar.
Page 3 then includes a planning guide, with questions to prompt the student in ways that will enable them to plan the presentation. This covers the student’s choice of topic, organising the main points of their speech and also possible techniques to engage their audience.
Page 4 finally provides a tick-sheet plenary which students can use to assess readiness for the subsequent delivery of their presentation.
