GCSE Speaking & Listening guide

(0)
A helpful guide to the Spoken Language component of the GCSE English Language qualification. The starter exercise on page 1 assists students in not only identifying a suitable topic, but also distinguishing between ‘challenging’ topics and those of a more simplistic kind. Page 2 then introduces some of the most important criteria by which presentations are assessed and an example presentation is provided (in video form) together with a tick-sheet that students can use to gauge the success of the student exemplar. Page 3 then includes a planning guide, with questions to prompt the student in ways that will enable them to plan the presentation. This covers the student’s choice of topic, organising the main points of their speech and also possible techniques to engage their audience. Page 4 finally provides a tick-sheet plenary which students can use to assess readiness for the subsequent delivery of their presentation.

Dragons' Den Persuasive Project! (Building Speaking & Listening and Persuasive Writing Skills!)

(1)
This resource is perfect for enabling students to build both their persuasive writing and their speaking and listening skills. Based upon the popular BBC series 'Dragons' Den', students have the opportunity to research, design, pitch, and evaluate arguments for their own inventions, whilst simultaneously analysing persuasive pitches, revising persuasive techniques, structuring arguments and articulating convincingly. Included is a 16 page booklet (I would say at least 4-5 hour lessons of tasks) that lead students to: - Introduce themselves and their interests; - Watch persuasive pitches (links included) and identify persuasive devices; - Analyse why persuasive devices are effective; - Structure an analysis appropriately; - Brainstorm ideas for an invention using imagination and helpful aiding questions; - Formulate an argument by considering key questions and counter arguments; - Write and present a persuasive pitch; - Peer-evaluate and self-evaluate persuasive pitches. I have also provided some examples of news stories featuring the worst and best pitches from the den, in order to provoke discussion about what makes a strong pitch. All images are licensed for commercial use and are cited throughout.

GCSE Speaking and Listening Full Unit - Persuasive Speeches

(0)
This is a unit designed to complete the speaking and listening component for GCSE students in around 6 to 8 lessons. The unit also covers persuasive writing skills needed for the English Language exam and was additionally used as a pre-reading exercise for Animal Farm. However, the unit can easily be adapted to remove the links to this text and stands as a discrete unit in its own right. The lessons ask students to develop a persuasive speech based on what qualities they think a Prime Minister should have and then go on to endorse one of three candidates for the job. There is a range of tasks throughout the lessons which are fully resourced and differentiated. The unit covers the planning, writing, rehearsal and performance of their final speeches and contains guidance for the formal assessment of the Spoken Language component. Lesson 1 of the Unit is available in my shop as a free download to give an indication of the type of work and standard of resource throughout the unit. Thanks for taking an interest in my resources.
