For children learning the initial sounds, this is a perfect game to help them identify words beginning with each sound.
Following the Read Write Inc sounds progression I have used this two ways…
“I spy with my little eye something beginning with p…” and the child finds a picture on their bingo card or…
“Who has a h-a-t?” and the child finds the hat on their bingo card or…
You could give the child the sounds board and cut up the pictures to match them the other way.
Real life pictures are used for real life context.
It really helped my beginner readers.

This set contains 20 picture bingo cards and 20 letter bingo cards to play in large or small groups.
Each card prints onto an A4 page (although you can alter the printer settings to print smaller versions if required.)
The small calling cards (pictures and letters) can be used to cover up or match the picture or letter sounds.
The larger calling cards (pictures and letters) can be held up for the children to look at.
This resource was developed to assist a group of children, 80% of whom were EAL students (English as an Additional Language). The goal was for them to learn both the vocabulary and the initial sounds.
This collection includes the following resources:
Sorting flashcards with the letters “s” and "a"
The flashcards should be printed, laminated, and cut out. These can then be used to group words based on their initial sound.
Memory game with “s” and "a"
Print, laminate, and cut the cards. Place the card image down. Children take turns selecting two cards and attempting to match the pictures.
Board Game Ants and Scarves
A die and some counters or plastic animals are required. Children select a counter to move along the number on the dice. They proceed by following the instructions on the board. The winner is the first person to cross the finish line.
I Spy “s” and “a” word game
Print, then laminate. The children take turns spotting a “s” or “a” word. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with “s,” and the other children ask, “Is it a snake?” Is a scarf?” and so on until they get the correct answer.
6 “s” and “a” Bingo Boards
Each child is given a Bingo Board. The flashcards are placed down and the children take turns picking a card. If it matches a picture on their board, they place a counter on the picture. The first person to cover all the pictures on their board shouts out “BINGO” and is the winner.
10 png files with pictures and words for each initial sound
These could be used electronically to create your own “s” and “a” Seesaw
“My s and a Book” digital book available on YouTube which can be used to introduce the “s” and “a” sound.
Please leave feedback.

Two colourful initial sound bingo games
In the set there are two sets of bingo game cards. Each set has 20 different bingo playing cards so they can be used for a whole class (the cards can be repeated for a larger class) or for group games.
One bingo game has colourful pictures and other set has letters. The bingo games can be played in various ways- by calling a letter and the child covering a picture if it begins with that sound, by calling a letter and covering the letter on their board, by calling a picture and covering the initial sound letter or by calling a picture and covering that picture on their board.
The calling cards can also be used in various ways- to play the bingo games, to play matching games to match pictures, letters or picture and initial sound, for phonics displays and many more ways.
Also included in the pack is an activity sheet with details of these games and others that can be played using this resource.
The bingo boards are approximately A4 size but by altering printer settings prior to printing you could print them larger or smaller.
Students match the letter card to a picture.
Play it like a Bingo, with one person showing the letters and saying the sound.
Or students could just match the letters to the cards.
Students should be saying the sounds as they match the letters to the pictures.

How To Use The Pre Reader Work Packs
At Guinea Pig Education we believe children do not need to spend years learning reading skills; this innovative new scheme teaches children to read in just six months to a year.
A non reader should start with our pre reading material. The Pre reader work packs use phonics or the sounds in words. The child can learn a series of phonic sounds, which give him or her a ‘tool’ to work out nearly 80% of words in the English language. The other 20% of words will be learnt by looking and saying the words.
In these packs, the child (or group of children) will be taught to recognise initial sounds as in ‘b’, ‘d’ and vowel sounds as in ‘a’ - c…a…t. They will practise running sounds together to make words. The sentence maker will help him or her to organise the words into sentences.
The packs are easy to use with clear instructions, for the adult to use with a child (or group of children).
The structured material encourages the child to practise word building and sentence making using phonic sounds. To make learning a really fun experience, the material contains word games, like snap and bingo. The child (children) can move on when the adult is confident the sounds have been learnt.
Learn To Read With Phonics Pre Reader packs are designed to start children reading who have not done any reading before. They are a starting point for learning to read with phonics. Children can start at three or four, if they are ready to concentrate.
The Pre Reader packs introduce the 26 sounds of the alphabet, the skills of sounding out words with phonics and blending phonic sounds to make three and four letter words. The child (children) should practise the material each day and move on only when the child is familiar with the material. The course is structured. Each new sound builds on the one that went before.
Tell the child (children) to personalise the drawings, adding to them, using their own ideas. Play the games. Repeat the exercises many times until they know the words. They should have fun learning to read.
