This resource was developed to assist a group of children, 80% of whom were EAL students (English as an Additional Language). The goal was for them to learn both the vocabulary and the initial sounds.

This collection includes the following resources:

Sorting flashcards with the letters “s” and "a"
The flashcards should be printed, laminated, and cut out. These can then be used to group words based on their initial sound.

Memory game with “s” and "a"
Print, laminate, and cut the cards. Place the card image down. Children take turns selecting two cards and attempting to match the pictures.

Board Game Ants and Scarves
A die and some counters or plastic animals are required. Children select a counter to move along the number on the dice. They proceed by following the instructions on the board. The winner is the first person to cross the finish line.

I Spy “s” and “a” word game
Print, then laminate. The children take turns spotting a “s” or “a” word. “I spy with my little eye something beginning with “s,” and the other children ask, “Is it a snake?” Is a scarf?” and so on until they get the correct answer.

6 “s” and “a” Bingo Boards
Each child is given a Bingo Board. The flashcards are placed down and the children take turns picking a card. If it matches a picture on their board, they place a counter on the picture. The first person to cover all the pictures on their board shouts out “BINGO” and is the winner.

10 png files with pictures and words for each initial sound
These could be used electronically to create your own “s” and “a” Seesaw

“My s and a Book” digital book available on YouTube which can be used to introduce the “s” and “a” sound.
