Writing About: the Library

Writing is one of the parts of language that students are developing. For some students, ESL/ELL for example, what they know about a topic may exceed their ability to communicate it through the written word. Students learn to write by writing. Writing needs to be original thought, not just copying something that someone else wrote. Therefore, it is imperative that opportunities are often provided for students to engage in writing about a variety of content. Students’ writing should make sense and be complete. Writing About offers a collaborative opportunity for small groups of students to work individually first to write about a concept and then to come together and to put their individual work into a paragraph about the topic. A word cloud of library associated words is given as a prompt for words and ideas. Facilitation notes are provided as well as student activity sheet. This is a good activity for struggling students and ESL/ELL who may need some support in writing. We'd like to hear about your experience with our resources. Just give it a star rating then tell us what you think, simple as that!

The Great Library Escape! Digital Breakout Room

An exciting and interactive way to bring reading and problem solving into the classroom. Students will use their comprehension and critical thinking skills to solve puzzles and crack the codes they need to escape! The class will use research skills to look up information about familiar and not-so-familiar authors. Furthermore, students will access reading-based vocabulary to solve a crossword, decode phone texts, and use classroom based knowledge to earn the lock codes. This experience has been designed for Year 6-8 students, although many English teachers have been caught putting the puzzles together too! Since it is all digital, there is no paper or prep to contend with! To heighten the drama, I usually put the police “Do Not Cross” tape across my door, play mysterious music, and have a giant digital countdown projected onto my board during each escape room activity. Your purchase will include: a digital teacher’s guide which includes a full breakdown of each puzzle and the answer codes the digital link to the escape website

The GAELS project (Glasgow Allied Electronically with Strathclyde) is a library-based project intended to promote a culture shift among engineering researchers at Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities. Our intention is to decrease researchers' dependence on separately held local print collections in favour of collaboratively held networked electronic resources. To support this aim, GAELS (1999) has created a courseware package to teach researchers the different information retrieval skills required to use such networked resources.
