Literacy Game: Synonym Spoons

(4)
This game is really popular with all classes. It’s designed for KS2 and KS3 but I have seen GCSE classes enjoy it too at the end of term. The game is good fun and is really helpful for expanding vocabulary. The rules are on a powerpoint that can be used with the class. A word document also has the rules and suggestions for the teacher and also has a set of synonyms. The set provided is for six players. For a larger class of thirty, you will just need to replicate the set five times. The sheets need be printed on card and cut up. I laminate mine for durability and this also means they can be wiped clean easily. Of course, you can change the words to suit the topic or text you are studying. I make a new set quite regularly- it’s a quick job. Once the children know how to play, the game can be used as a starter or a game at the end of the lesson if they’ve finished their work. Hope you and your classes enjoy! Please leave a review if you found this resource useful :-)

Money Games Calculating Change BUNDLE

4 Resources
Practise the key skill of finding change for different amounts! Key Stage 2 (KS2) Money Change Games and Activities BUNDLE for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 (Y3 / Y4 / Y5 / Y6), depending on ability: 16 fun, differentiated, illustrated four-in-a-row Maths game boards (each featuring 36 prices in UK currency) for calculating change from £1, £5, £10 and £20, plus a loop card / dominoes set for each of the above amounts. Ideal for starter activities and early finishers activities in Maths lessons or for practice in Money Weeks. All in PDF format. In Scotland, use for Primary 4, 5, 6 and 7.   FOUR IN A ROW A fun, strategic activity for consolidating this key money / shopping skill. A total of 16 boards. All four packs (One pound, five pounds, ten pounds, twenty pounds) include: 2 standard game boards (featuring different items and prices from each other) 2 lower ability game boards (same boards as above but with mostly less challenging calculations) Answer grids for all 4 boards for at-a-glance checking by pupils or teacher   Intended to be laminated and used again and again. Children can work as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. It works especially well if they roll a dice each time to find which column they have to pick a calculation from (columns numbered 1-6). If there are no questions left in a particular column, they could skip a go or roll again. Pupils use a different coloured whiteboard pen to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if both players / teams are using the same colour. I recommend printing in A3 but it works fine in A4. The LA versions have a star next to the title but could perhaps be printed on different coloured card or paper if required.   LOOP GAME / FOLLOW ME CARDS / DOMINOES Four 20-card sets (£1, £5, £10, £20) that can start with any card. A child reads the ‘I spend’ part first with others working out whether they have the relevant ‘I give you’. Use as a game for groups or perhaps as a whole class / whole group starter or plenary (in pairs if necessary). LA pupils could be given less challenging cards so they can still experience success. I hope these Numeracy resources save you time and work well in your class. I would be very grateful for a review if you get a moment. Thank you.   Some of my other popular KS2 Maths resources: Mental Maths Bundle Multiplication / Division Bundle Angles / Symmetry Bundle For time-saving printables and presentations to plan Primary Literacy, Maths and French lessons, please visit FullShelf Resources

The Debate Game

This is a great game to play in pairs or with the whole class. It really helps pupils to use persuasive language while improving their speaking and listening skills. They also love it. For Pairs You need 2 dice. The first player throws a dice for the horizontal and the second player throws a dice for vertical. You then choose who is for and who is against each statement. I usually choose the first round then the second round is chosen by whoever lost the first round and so on. Each pupil has to come up with the most reasons to support their side of the statement. The person with the most wins then you throw the dice again. For Whole Class You need 2 dice. The first player throws a dice for the horizontal and the second player throws a dice for vertical. You then choose who is for and who is against each statement. I usually choose the first round then the second round is chosen by whoever lost the first round and so on. The whole class decides, by raising hands, which was the most persuasive. It helps to limit the amount of time to say 1 minute each.

With a total of 14 games, each focusing on a specific spelling pattern or phonics rule, students will have ample opportunities to gain confidence and mastery through repetitive practice. Studies have shown that games are a highly effective way of teaching phonics. The RWI (Read Write Inc.) Phonics programme is a highly regarded method for teaching phonics, and these board games are a perfect complement to the program. They provide students with additional opportunities to practice the skills they are learning and help to reinforce the key concepts and strategies taught through the RWI programme. These games come in both colourful and black-and-white versions, giving you the option to print on your own coloured paper or let students colour them in. Each game is designed with attractive illustrations and clear instructions, making it easy for students to play independently or in small groups. Based on the RWI sets of sounds and the green within those sets. Great for continuous provision or interventions. Can be sent home to play with parents. Each set has a board game. e.g 1.1 has 1, 1.2 has 1 apart from 1.7 which has 3 due to the amount of words. 40 board games in total. Examples of the board games can be seen in the pictures attached. The sheets are A4 and can be printed on paper or card or copied to be A3 if needed. I would suggest laminating them to ensure their longevity.
