This is resource contains an exercise that gets the children to practice using a ruler; as well as a presentation on converting units of measure. The worksheet asks students to measure the lines with their rulers. They then must convert from cm to mm. As an extension at the end, they are required to draw their own lines based on a length given in centimetres. The presentation goes through how to convert from mm to cm, and from cm to m. There are exercised along the way to get the children practicing. This lesson is suited for a Year 4 class or could be used for revision with Year 5. The answers to the lengths are also included.

A complete lesson on how to use a protractor properly. Includes lots of large, clear, animated examples that make this fiddly topic a lot easier to teach. Designed to come after pupils have been introduced to acute, obtuse and reflex angles and they can already estimate angles. Activities included: Starter: A nice set of problems where pupils have to judge whether given angles on a grid are acute, 90 degrees or obtuse. The angles are all very close or equal to 90 degrees, so pupils have to come up with a way (using the gridlines) to decide. Main: An extended set of examples, intended to be used as mini whiteboard questions, where an angle is shown and then a large protractor is animated, leaving pupils to read off the scale and write down the angle. The range of examples includes measuring all angle types using either the outer or inner scale. It also includes examples of subtle ‘problem’ questions like the answer being between two dashes on the protractor’s scale or the lines of the angle being too short to accurately read off the protractor’s scale. These are all animated to a high standard and should help pupils avoid developing any misconceptions about how to use a protractor. Three short worksheets of questions for pupils to consolidate. The first is simple angle measuring, with accurate answers provided. The second and third offer more practice but also offer a deeper purpose - see the cover image. Instructions for a game for pupils to play in pairs, basically drawing random lines to make an angle, both estimating the angle, then measuring to see who was closer. This is an introductory practical lesson to demonstrate how pupils measure time and teaches them the importance of accuracy. This resource pack contains: A PPT (14 slides) and handouts (2 sheets) . Included in this resource is two of our timers complete with MUSIC. Activities include: Starter Task: Thinking Skills question Activity on on recording time digitally. Pupils will find out when completing the challenges that they won’t be accurate. Therefore, they will want to repeat challenge reinforcing the need for repeat experiments to find averages. Experiment on measuring different times and two practical challenges. Plenary (Exit task) : Think, Pair Share- Please note… This Exit Task/Plenary is designed to draw out the findings of the measuring time activities. These being that the children will learn that using a stop click to seconds and hundredths of seconds will give them a precise time. However, this is not 100% accurate due to human error (reaction times). You should discuss how to improve on accuracy ( use of repeats and find an average). The last slide contains a quick review of what they learned. The worksheet contains 6 different angles. The children must first name the angles. Physics: Measuring Force, Newton Meters. This is a practical lesson introducing pupils to Newton meters. Measuring Force: Physics: Measuring Force, Newton Meters Lesson pack contains: A PPT (15 slides) and a peer assessment handout (1 sheet). Activities include: Starter Task: A Thinking Skills questions- measuring force. Task 1: Pupils are introduced to Sir Isaac Newton and his invention, the Newton Meter. Then pupils are asked to measure everyday items and record this information in the form of a table in their exercise books. Task 2: Pupils should then be given a spring and a hook and 5 weights (1-5 kilograms). They will need to hang the spring and add the weights one by one and measure the length of the spring each time a weight is added and record the data in the form of a table. They will then be asked to plot a line graph (you will need to provide graph paper for this task). Task 3: Pupils will need to conclude on the results and describe the relationship between weights added and the length of the spring and link this to how a Newton meter works.
