KS2 / KS3 Drama - The Grinch Play Script (Christmas Play)

(0)
A funny play loosely based on the Grinch by Dr. Seuss, and the well known movie. The story revolves around the town of Whoville, where all the Whos love Christmas. In fact they love Christmas so much it is all they talk about! However, a mysterious outcast lives to the North of the town; this outcast hates Christmas and anything to do with the festive time of year. This outcast is called the Grinch! The play follows the story of Cindy-Lou and her family as they open up to the Grinch, and try to show him what Christmas is all about. However, the Grinch has his own plans to ruin Christmas for the town, and steals all the presents on Christmas eve. He has a change of heart however when he hears the town enjoying Christmas even though he had stolen all of the presents. His heart grows and he quickly returns the gifts and takes part in all the festivities. There are song recommendations throughout the script, with a mixture of traditional Christmas songs and modern songs. There are 28 speaking parts, with additional non-speaking roles too for up to 30 students. The play is around 40-50 minutes long. I hope you have fun with it, my class had a ball! This is a script for a class of about 28 children but could easily be adapted to a smaller class. It tells the story of Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance, from the recruitment of the crew to the end of the voyage. It was used for an end-of-year 6 assembly as a culmination of their learning. We added in readings of newspaper reports, diary entries and poems but could easily be done without. We used 2 narrators.

Constructive play

WHAT IS CONSTRUCTIVE PLAY? If you search the internet you will quickly find that there are several definitions of ‘constructive play’, two are shown below: ‘Constructive play involves building and making things no one has ever seen before. As young children fiddle with, sort, and arrange materials, ideas and imagination begin to flow. Questions arise naturally. They wonder: What will happen if I put this here? How tall will it go? Where did the bubble come from? In this way, constructive play serves to focus the minds of children through their fingertips and leads them to invent and discover new possibilities, to fulfil their sense of purpose .’ ‘When children manipulate their environment to create things, they are engaged in constructive play. Experimenting with materials, they can build towers with blocks, construct objects with miscellaneous loose parts, play in the sand, and draw sidewalk murals with chalk. Children learn basic knowledge about stacking, building, constructing, and drawing, discovering which combinations work and which don’t’ . Whatever the definition it is clear that play, in all its forms, help children to develop a range of skills through fun and exciting experiential learning activities. Helping children learn through play is one of the most satisfying activities any professional or parent can experience.
