This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s ‘The Secret Garden.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS3 expectations within the National Curriculum framework. Children have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text. Complete scheme of work for ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Activities per chapter.

This is a 7 day Teaching Powerpoint complete with success criteria’s and differentiated resources that include grammar and comprehension and leads to a long writing task - character profile of Funni. A WAGOLL is included for the long write. The lessons include talk tasks - comprehension and grammar based on the book and it is pitched at National Curriculum levels Year 1 and 2. See breakdown of teaching materials below. All the lessons follow in sequence and each lesson whether comprehension or grammar builds up to the long writing task. This set of lessons is structured based on the best pedagogical approaches to use in the classroom such as AFL questions to gather what learners already know, the use of talk partners to share learning, allowing learners to choose their own task from MILD, SPICY and HOT (this works wonders for their self-esteem) The tasks are differentiated and progressive you can teach and model on the PowerPoint. The learners’ can use their work from Day 1 to Day 6 and interweave it into the Long Write. Students learn about mapping and the value of natural elements within their immediate environment. They design a school ‘secret garden’ to improve environmental awareness and encourage creative play. This lesson is designed to be taught outside. By spending time outdoors and connecting to nature, students are more likely to care for and conserve nature as adults.

Skim and Scan activity to aid speedy retrieval skills using an extract from The Secret Garden Children have to locate a series of words within the text, similar to a wordsearch. My class enjoy using an IWB timer to see how quickly then can locate all the words. Additional vocabulary extensions activity included.

Firstly, to encourage them to read the actual book which we have in our class library. Also to practise retrieval, inference, explanation and justifying their opinions with evidence from the text questions, all geared towards the SATs. The answers are at the end of the document.
