SEN Teaching Toolkit

(0)
This toolkit provides information on how to support the needs of pupils with SEN/EHCPs in the classroom as part of a quality first teaching approach. Each section links to one of the four broad areas of need. You will find: • The broad area of need. Cognition & learning, Communication & interaction, SEMH & Sensory needs. • Categories of potential difficulty within that need. • What that area of difficulty might look like in the classroom. • Supportive quality first teaching strategies that will offer support. Each list of ‘What it might look like?’ and ‘Supportive Quality First Teaching Strategies’ are not exhaustive but may provide a useful starting point to help you help your pupils access learning. At the end of each section are resources linked to some of the strategies. The Toolkit can be edited and new needs and provisions can be added to meet the needs of your students.

Bundle of 22 ready to teach and fully resourced lessons for 'Diverse Shorts' text

Diverse Shorts Bundle of twenty two differentiated lessons (with all required resources) designed to be taught from the top down. All slides are dual coded with vocabulary support and visual stimuli. Every lesson offers multiple stretch and challenge opportunities and a clear applied learning time task. This bundle also offers two AFL opportunities - one reading and one writing. Terror Kid (4 lessons) Looking for JJ (5 Lessons) Orange Boy (8 lessons including a reading AFL) Tender Earth (5 lessons) I currently work as 2ic in a Harris academy English department. I have years of teaching and planning experience under my belt. I am SALT trained and have spent many years working with SEN nurture groups as well as working as a G&T champion. I try to create resources and lessons that teach from the top down but offer differentiation opportunities. ***After a recent negative review I would like to make it explicitly clear (f it isn’t already) that these lessons are to be taught alongside the book compilation of stories by EMC publications, called ‘Diverse Shorts’. The short stories are found in this book and are not with the lessons and aren’t available as extracts for copyright reasons.

Word Wall - SEN resource for teaching key words

Can be laminated or photocopied. Choose the key words you want the child to learn. Write randomly across the bricks. Make sure you include at least one that the child is already confident with. If the child is confident, they can read the words independently from the start, or with less confident children, the adult can read first, then child and adult together, before the child reads independently. Use frequently to practise SEN targets.

An Inspector Calls - SEN and ESL Learners

This GCSE, English Literature Unit contains all the resources you need to teach An Inspector Calls! It contains writing frames, model essays, vocabulary activities, a play summary poem, comprehensions and much more! To help students who struggle to understand the play, there is a poem to summarise the plot along with a comprehension. There is a presentation on the relationship between Birling and The Inspector which contains key topic sentences, a model essay and an assessment. Another presentation explores the characters and contains a summary of their role in the play, along with key quotations and an example essay which is colour coded to highlight each stage. A suggested writing frame is provided along with an example of how to use this. The unit is particularly useful for SEN and ESL pupils who struggle to express their ideas, although it would also be invaluable for mainstream students. The unit offers excellent value and will provide you with a wide range of resources to teach the play!

SEN Photosynthesis resource pack

A selection of resources suitable for lower ability / SEN teaching of Photosynthesis. The photosynthesis equation card sort is very simple, and I used this as a starter which could be left out on tables as a visual reminder when needed. The Photosynthesis cards can be used in a couple of ways - I started by using the keyword and picture sections to build literacy, and then added in the definitions. Definitions have word blanks to get students thinking. Spell check - 3 versions of each word, only one is correct, circle the correct one. Greenhouse worksheet - used to aid discussion on how greenhouse features can aid photosynthesis.

This is a 1 day DIFFERENTIATED English plan/ TEACHING POWERPOINT complete with success criteria’s for the task and differentiated scaffolds and accompanying resources. The teaching powerpoint also allows you to model answers on the different task pages. It includes a word bank to support EAL/SEN learners. The learning objective is making a PREDICTION based on the clues given on the FRONT COVER. This lesson gives guidance on the best pedagogical approaches to use in the classroom such as AFL questions to gather what learners’ already know, the use of talk partners to share learning, allowing learners to choose their own task (this works wonders for their self esteem), differentiated tasks that are progressive from MILD to Spicy, Spicy to Hot and from HOT to Extra HOT and assessment at the end of the lesson against the success criteria to assess learning.

Low ability / SEN Romeo and Juliet 40+ lessons

(2)
I have put many hours into the creation of this resource to make Romeo and Juliet accessible to the very weakest students and those who need very heavy differentiation. I’m unsure how to allow a preview so I have uploaded separately a sample lesson for you to preview. This knowledge- rich booklet includes 43 lessons (99 pages), fully resourced and ready to print off and use. You could use it to teach the full play or pick and choose sections. Each lesson includes a low-stakes recall quiz, an accessible knowledge phase, knowledge check quizzes and suggested questions along with a range of activities on the way through. For KS3 it can be used alone but I would recommend that for KS4, it is used alongside your readings of the original text. It does include contextual information to support assessment objective 3 (context) at GCSE. The booklet will occasionally refer to the chosen formulaic response structure I use with my students along with sentence stems to scaffold a response so you may wish to replace these references to your own response structure/ acronyms if you prefer. I am selling this incredibly cheaply for what it is but please be aware that while it has been a labour of love, it may not be perfect. While I know it is not littered with errors, you may find a very occasional missing punctuation mark or ‘typo’. Do please let me know what you think of this resource!

The Alcohol Educational Trust has developed a comprehensive teaching resource based on visual rich and story led activities for children with Special Educational Needs or English as a Second Language. The Alcohol Education Trust has worked in partnership with the SEN specialists Image in Action to ensure our approaches are appropriate. Many of the activities in this resource can be run in tandem with the Talk About Alcohol Teacher Workbook, which will allow teachers to accommodate pupils of different abilities within the same lessons. However, the flexible nature of the lesson plans means that stand-alone sessions with a specific group of young people would work well too. Each section of the resource is supported by a simple PowerPoint presentation, with clear aims and details of any additional materials that might be required. Key aspects of alcohol education are covered: building knowledge, exploring feelings and emotions, and consent.

Understanding and Differentiating for SEN

Two A3 Documents included in this download. These can be used separately or printed back-to-back to create a fantastic double-sided A3 SEN ‘cheat sheet’. Differentiation can sometimes feel overwhelming, with the need to adjust or modify your lesson to ensure that every student’s needs are met. We are also often told to ‘differentiate’ - but without much clue of how to actually do this. This document is here to help! This resource contains: An overview of all four areas of needs Basic teaching strategies for each area of need An explanation of what ‘SEN’ means Detailed, specific strategies for differentiation for ASD, ADHD and Dyslexia It is important to be aware that each child is different and not every strategy with work for every student in every lesson. This resource aims to give you a clear and detailed list of a range of strategies that you can use to help support students in class. He She They Pronoun Teaching Pack

I have incorporated a set of activities for supporting the teaching of the pronouns he, she and they. A great resource for intervention with SEN and EAL children who might be struggling with this concept. I would beginning initially with the He, She and They sorting activity, and then once they have grasped this then move onto the He, She and They picture cards to help develop their sentence building skills using the correct pronoun. Once they are confident with saying sentences using the correct pronouns you can then move on to the He, She and They worksheet to consolidate their learning by writing sentences describing the pictures.
