Word Class Scavenger Hunt

(0)
This is a fun and engaging resource designed to help your children to learn or revise their knowledge of word class usage and definitions. If you are looking to consolidate learning as part of SATs preparation, this would offer a more interactive and inclusive way to achieve this. Children could work in pairs or independently and you could add challenges for any greater depth or more willing learners. It would suit UKS2 children but could be adapted for LKS2 also. Clues include questions about each word class which the children have to answer to lead them to the next clue. On each clue card, there are definitions of: nouns (including common, abstract and proper), verbs, adjectives, adverbs, determiners, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns and conjunctions (subordinating and co-ordinating). This is a self-checking resource which negates the need for teacher marking but does include answers when the children start at Station A. I have offered various ways to use the resource to suit the needs of your class and available space. The design is minimal and I have been mindful of ink and paper usage. There is an answer sheet that can be stuck into books, if needed and instructions for the children to follow.

Word Classes - AfL (Quiz Quiz Trade) KS2

Word Class Quiz-Quiz-Trade Cards (Targeted at Years 4, 5, and 6) These cards are designed to help pupils consolidate their understanding of key word classes, including adjectives, noun phrases, conjunctions, determiners, prepositions, adverbs and verbs. How to use: Each pupil receives a card with a question and answer printed side-by-side. 2. Pupils move around the room and pair up with a partner. Pupil A reads their question aloud to Pupil B, who attempts to answer it. Pupil A uses the answer printed on their card to check, correct or guide if needed. Then, Pupil B reads their question to Pupil A, following the same process. After both have had a turn, they swap cards and move on to a new partner. As pupils repeat this process, they become increasingly confident and fluent, reinforcing key terminology and grammar through repetition and peer discussion. This is a fantastic formative assessment strategy (AfL), perfect as a starter, mid-lesson activity, or plenary. It promotes movement, inclusion, and purposeful talk. The activity is accessible for all, including Widgit-supported cards for EAL learners, and empowers all pupils to “sound like experts” in a lively, engaging format.

A nice starter, plenary or homework task to complete. Students often forget their word classes when it comes to secondary school, so this would be a good task to complete to remind them of particular word classes. Would work as an additional activity on grammar, match up some examples or finding the definitions of the terms first. It is great to see year 9s discussing whether a word is a pronoun or not!

Word Classes Bingo

This resource is designed to be used with KS3 and 4 students (though the nature of the activity means it can easily be adapted for younger and older students) to practise their knowledge of word classes. The file contains thirty bingo grids containing 9 clues (e.g a noun beginning with b) that students must allocate words by filling in the gaps as the teacher shouts them out. The design of this resource means that it can be used over and over again with the same classes without getting repetitive as new combinations of words can be used each time. This resource includes thirty different bingo grids (which can be reallocated and re-used) and a list of words (sorted into the four classes). Included in this file: editable Publisher versions of both grids and word list, and a ready-to-print PDF version. TOP TIP: the blank grids can be enlarged, printed onto card and laminated in order to create ‘whiteboard’ versions which can be used over and over again with dry-wipe marker pens.
