This lesson is designed as an KS3 introductory module called ‘Invaders and Settlers AD43 - 1066’. In this engaging lesson, children are provided with an introductory understanding of the Anglo-Saxons, through learning: -who the Anglo-Saxons were and when they lived; -how they invaded and inhabited England; -the names and basic features of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge harvesting - gauging what children already know about the Anglo-Saxon era, and gathering what else they would like to know; -Answering recall questions based upon the areas of history that they have learnt previously that are pertinent to this topic; -Defining who the Anglo-Saxons were and when they lived; -Watching an informative video providing some of the basic facts about Anglo-Saxon life, and then answering questions to show their understanding; -Learning about how they invaded England, and after much fighting split the land into seven kingdoms; -Completing a map-based activity to show where the kingdoms were and who lived there; -Completing plenary activities to demonstrate their understanding of each of the concepts learnt in the lesson; -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective. This resource come with a 7-lesson plan all about the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England. The sequence of lessons: hook, chronology lesson, gathering information, making sense of the information, children draw their own conclusions, check their understand and then the final outcome. This unit follows on from the children already knowing about the Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain. These lessons allow the children to think critically if the Vikings were raiders of traders. It comes with key skills for each lesson: chronology, significance, historical enquiry and interpreting historical sources for each lesson there is also key vocabulary and resources clearly highlighted. This planning also comes with clearly differentiated resources. Only exception is if you want to use a physical timeline and artefacts, but other options are offered. On the planning grid there is also the option to assess the children as you move through the lessons according to the skills if you so wish. Finally, there is a cover sheet with skills that can be stuck into the pupil’s books at the beginning of the topic.

This lesson is designed to help pupils to understand key concepts of paganism and Christianity and how the two religions existed side by side in the Anglo-Saxon period. Pupils will complete a dictionary challenge to become familiar with associated vocabulary and then they learn about three important Christian missionaries. They will watch a video to reflect on how Christianity spread across Anglo-Saxon Britain and then design commemorative stained glass windows depicting key figures. I taught this lesson ahead of the Norman Conquest unit in Y7, so students could have a point of comparison when they later considered how much change there was in the Norman Period. Could also be taught as a lesson in part of a unit on the Anglo-Saxons, or as part of a thematic study. Full lesson with resources included.
