In this unit children will research, design, make a prototype, evaluate and make a final fairground ride. Children will work in groups to design and make their own moving fairground ride. They will learn how to make an electrical circuit and have a go at making a prototype so that they can revise their learning.

6 week art unit based on the artist Lowry. Chidlren will first explore Lowry’s art and life and research some of his painting and changing style. They will then be given opportunities to re-create one of his famous drawings before using their new skills to create their own street life piece. My Y5’s loved this unit and their outcomes were wonderful.

6 week writing unit based on the novel: Oliver Twist. Weeks 1-2 Story opening. Children write the opening to Oliver Twist based on the opening of the movie. Grammar warm-ups and model texts are included. Weeks 3-4 Character in a narrative. Children write a character description of Fagin. Grammar warm-ups and model texts are included. Weeks 5-6 Balanced argument. Children write a balanced argument on whether Fagin is a friend or foe. Children investigate the different opinions given by main characters and write their own argument on Fagin’s motives. Units come with Power Points, resources, grammar warm-ups and model texts. Hoping it’ll save someone some time :)

5 week guided reading unit based on ‘The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club’. The unit is designed to expose the class to various genres of text. The idea is that children read the class novel (The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club) daily during reading time. Questions are then answered during guided reading on a Monday and Friday. The other guided reading sessions (Tues, Wed, Thurs) explore various texts linked to the ‘Biomes Geography Theme’.

This unit is loosely based on Pie Corbett’s T4W model of writing. Children are first introduced to a model text and will analyse different elements of figurative language. Children will then focus on metaphors / parenthesis / show not tell in grammar lessons and grammar warm-ups. There are opportunities for children to then apply this grammatical elements into their own creative short-burst writing pieces. They will then box-up (plan) their final piece of suspense writing.

This two week writing unit focuses on astronaut Helen Sharman and links to the Y5 Space theme. Children will analyse a model text (Neil Armstrong bio) and learn the grammatical features before researching Helen’s life and writing her biography.

4 week unit of writing based on novel: Wild Boy Weeks 1-2 Play script. Children will create their very own play script based on Wild Boy. There are opportunities for speaking and listening, drama and grammar warm-ups to re-cap Y5 grammar including dialogue. Weeks 3-4 Play script evaluation. Children will write a non-fiction evaluation based on their play script. Grammar warm-ups consider formal language and sentence structure. Weeks 5-6 Poetry. Children will write a poem about a character of their choosing. There are lots of opportunities in the lessons for children to analyse poems (both rhyming and non-rhyming) and practise writing their own short burst poetry. Grammar warm-ups explore metaphors and similes.

During this unit, children will practise their drawing skills and techniques before putting together a self portrait - me now and future me. We did this as a one week project but could be used over a half term if art lessons are once per week.

This unit is loosely based on Pie Corbett’s T4W. This unit re-caps figurative language including similes and metaphors. Children have opportunities to write short-burst character descriptions, in week one, and setting descriptions, in week 2, using pictures as a stimulus. Their final piece will be a narrative.

This two week writing unit is loosely designed on Pie Corbett’s T4W. The children will analyse the model text and then explore and learn the grammatical features. After that, children will practise applying these features in different short-burst writing opportunities. The outcome is for children to successfully write a setting description in a narrative.

This 6 week unit comes complete with all resources. It begins by introducing the children to Queen Victoria and her life. The lessons then delve deeper into different aspects of her life and children will consider how her life shaped the UK today. There are lots of opportunities for children to become historical investigators and decide whether life was better before or after the industrial revolution.

6 week unit of guided reading for UKS2. The idea is the class novel (Street Child) is read daily during reading time. The unit is designed for the class to answer questions about the novel on a Monday and a Friday. The other guided reading lessons (Tues, Wed, Thurs) explore various text extracts linked to a ‘Victorian Theme’. These include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, lyrics, and visual literacy.

4 week art unit based on the artist Roy Lichtenstein. Children will first explore Roy’s art before practising his techniques. They will go on to create their own piece based on Roy’s work.

7 week guided reading unit based on ‘Wonder’. The unit is designed to expose the class to various genres of text. The idea is that children read the class novel (Wonder) daily during reading time. Questions are then answered during guided reading on a Monday and Friday. The other guided reading sessions (Tues, Wed, Thurs) explore various texts linked to PSHE.
