In this unit children will research, design, make a prototype, evaluate and make a final fairground ride. Children will work in groups to design and make their own moving fairground ride. They will learn how to make an electrical circuit and have a go at making a prototype so that they can revise their learning.

6 week art unit based on the artist Lowry. Chidlren will first explore Lowry’s art and life and research some of his painting and changing style. They will then be given opportunities to re-create one of his famous drawings before using their new skills to create their own street life piece. My Y5’s loved this unit and their outcomes were wonderful.

6 week writing unit based on the novel: Oliver Twist. Weeks 1-2 Story opening. Children write the opening to Oliver Twist based on the opening of the movie. Grammar warm-ups and model texts are included. Weeks 3-4 Character in a narrative. Children write a character description of Fagin. Grammar warm-ups and model texts are included. Weeks 5-6 Balanced argument. Children write a balanced argument on whether Fagin is a friend or foe. Children investigate the different opinions given by main characters and write their own argument on Fagin’s motives. Units come with Power Points, resources, grammar warm-ups and model texts. 5 week guided reading unit based on ‘The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club’. The unit is designed to expose the class to various genres of text. The idea is that children read the class novel (The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club) daily during reading time. Questions are then answered during guided reading on a Monday and Friday. The other guided reading sessions (Tues, Wed, Thurs) explore various texts linked to the ‘Biomes Geography Theme’.

This unit is loosely based on Pie Corbett’s T4W model of writing. Children are first introduced to a model text and will analyse different elements of figurative language. Children will then focus on metaphors / parenthesis / show not tell in grammar lessons and grammar warm-ups. There are opportunities for children to then apply this grammatical elements into their own creative short-burst writing pieces. They will then box-up (plan) their final piece of suspense writing.

4 week unit of writing based on novel: Wild Boy Weeks 1-2 Play script. Children will create their very own play script based on Wild Boy. There are opportunities for speaking and listening, drama and grammar warm-ups to re-cap Y5 grammar including dialogue. Weeks 3-4 Play script evaluation. Children will write a non-fiction evaluation based on their play script. Grammar warm-ups consider formal language and sentence structure. Weeks 5-6 Poetry. Children will write a poem about a character of their choosing. There are lots of opportunities in the lessons for children to analyse poems (both rhyming and non-rhyming) and practise writing their own short burst poetry. Grammar warm-ups explore metaphors and similes.
