English Functional Skills - Entry Level 3 - Reading Workbook

I purchased this resource for pupils to use as homework or during cover lessons. It has a clear and attractive layout, which works particularly well for lower-ability groups and those needing more accessible materials. However, the design may feel a little too childish for older pupils who are working at this level. The resource is ready to print, but it is also provided in PowerPoint format, making it easy to adapt and edit to suit specific class needs. One aspect I found less effective for my learners was the structure: many of the instructional pages appear at the beginning, with practice opportunities later on. For my pupils, it would be more beneficial to introduce a skill (for example, putting words into alphabetical order) and then immediately follow this with related practice tasks before moving on to a new skill. However, I appreciated the flexibility of the resource, as having it in an editable format meant I could easily adapt the structure to better suit my learners’ needs. The inclusion of an answer booklet is also a real strength, making it particularly useful for parents and non-specialists who may be supporting students independently. Overall, this is a well-designed and flexible resource that can be adapted to suit a range of learners, though some restructuring may improve its effectiveness for certain groups.

I bought these clear, well-structured resources for use in my Nurture classroom in a mainstream secondary school. Each booklet clearly aligns with the Functional Skills objectives and allows for independent work. The tasks in the booklets are chunked and scaffolded with visuals, which has been particularly helpful in reducing cognitive overload for my SEN and EAL students. I have also found these booklets to be very versatile: I have used them during whole-class teaching, where they have enabled multiple pupils to work at different levels; as a homework task; and for sending home during periods of absence. I would definitely recommend these booklets.

This has been a great resource for my Year 11 Functional Skills group. The tasks are ideal preparation for the exam. Ideal for SEND pupils.
