Example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the historical novel Street Child by Berlie Doherty, set in Victorian London.

The model text contains a conversation between Jim’s sisters, Emily and Lizzie, about the break-up of their family. Three differentiated versions of the text have been included for different ability levels.

The model text can be used as a WAGOLL to examine using the differentiated Feature Find worksheets (answers included) before children attempt their own dialogue writing based on the book.

These resources can be used as part of a study of the novel or as a stand-alone lesson, using the text extract provided.

All documents are provided in PDF and easily editable Word format.

The following features of dialogue and speech can be found in the example dialogues:
• Actual words spoken, with inverted commas on either side
• Words spoken separated from the reporting clause by a comma, question mark and exclamation mark
• Reporting clause written before the words spoken, separated by a comma
• Variety of speech verbs
• Adverbs
• New paragraph every time the speaker/character changes
• Actions of the characters showing feelings/personality
• Split speech: one sentence spoken but split into two by the reporting clause
• Split speech: two or more sentences spoken at once split into two by the reporting clause
• Two or more sentences spoken at once with the reporting clause at the beginning/end
• No reporting clause used when speaker is obvious
• Contractions within speech
