This engaging, high-quality planning (706 words), 18-slide PowerPoint and 3 resources includes everything you need to teach children about the being able to identify whether a material is opaque or transparent. Children will complete a test/investigation to identify the opacity of familiar materials. This planning is lots of fun and has been designed to develop vocabulary and scientific skills.

The lesson design is as follows, children look at the vocabulary of ‘opaque’ and ‘transparent’ with some examples. There are then 3 problem solving questions, and then the children will complete their test. After the test is complete they compare their results with their predictions.

The resources include clear set up instructions, a sheet for recording the test on, and a scaffold to remind children of the meaning of opaque and transparent. The planning is clearly laid out and every file is easily labeled by lesson to make everything quick and easy for you.

The experiment requires minimal set up and all of the physical resources are likely to be found within a school.

Please note: this lesson is taken from my 6 lessons on materials for Year 1 students, however this specific lesson meets some of the objectives in both the Year 1 and Year 2 National Curriculum, as highlighted on the planning.
