How do we acquire a sense of place? Students create a list of ways that they can discover a new place and then categorise the list into different headings?
Categories of Place through Media - LO: To explain how media represents a place.
Students share ideas about how do we acquire a sense of place and then write down the key idea. Students make notes on Genius loci, topophilia and topopphobia, and a sense of place in fiction. Students read the two passages from the novel ‘Us’, David Nicholls, 2015. Explain to the students that the author only visited one of these places. Which do you think it is? Explain your answer. Students then move around the class deciding which sources are most reliable to represent that place and complete a table. Students then use this information to answer an exam question: Name one place that you have studied. Name one artistic source and explain how it helped you to develop your knowledge and understanding of that place. [3 marks]
