Why was the 18th amendment created, and how did the 21st amendment change its effect on American society? This document and opinion analysis activity examines the background and impact of the 18th and 21st Amendments, the rise and fall of Prohibition, and its effects on American society. Students will analyze primary and secondary source documents, including newspaper headlines and firsthand accounts. They’ll then answer corresponding scaffolding questions. Finally, they will respond to a summary question to apply their knowledge of how Prohibition led to unintended consequences and why it was ultimately repealed.
