Students struggling with main idea?
These 2nd Grade nonfiction science task cards are designed to give targeted practice to second graders learning to find the main idea in nonfiction passages. Featuring 30 short reading passages, these cards help students identify the main idea, differentiate between the main idea and supporting details, and build background on 2nd-grade NGSS-aligned science topics.
Passages are organized into three topics: Matter, Plants & Habitats, and Earth’s Systems. Each topic has 10 cards and two levels of difficulty.
The cards all have multiple-choice main idea questions at the bottom, with first the first level of difficulty having three choices and the second level having four. As students learn about topics such as water erosion, wind erosion, habitats, ecosystems, liquids, gases, and the properties of materials, they reinforce their comprehension by finding the main idea.
The differentiated nature of the cards, as well as the clear Science connection, makes these cards helpful for literacy centers, review, and vocabulary building for key 2nd-grade topics. It also makes them a good choice for targeted support with English Language Learners (ELL) students, as it reinforces reading comprehension and scientific vocabulary at the same time.
