A complete lesson on solving linear simultaneous equations, for Edexcel IAL Pure Mathematics 1 (Chapter 3: Equations and inequalities).
Students learn elimination using the rule “different signs add, same signs subtract”, including multiplying first when the coefficients don’t match. They also learn substitution and how to choose the quickest method. A “Same question, two methods” slide solves one pair of equations both ways, one line at a time. Equation labels (1), (2) and (3) are in a different colour, so they never look like part of the working.
Includes (15 slides):
Learning objectives and a starter
Elimination and substitution explained with real pairs of equations
Four step-by-step worked examples with animated working
Common mistakes, each shown with its question
Eight practice questions with answers
An exam-style question with a full M1/A1 mark scheme
A plenary
Links to Exercise 3A. Editable PowerPoint, from Mr Edine Maths (@mredinemaths on YouTube).
