Grade 5 STEM Challenge Cards | 102 Print-and-Go Engineering & Science Challenges

Make Grade 5 STEM planning easier with 102 ready-to-use challenge cards designed to develop independent engineering, investigation, problem-solving, and data-analysis skills. These cards pair with the Grade 5 STEM Full-Year Curriculum and provide students with structured challenges involving criteria, constraints, budgets, measurements, real-world clients, and evidence-based decision-making.

The resource includes 36 Weekly Challenge Cards, 36 Level Up Cards, 18 Innovator Talk Cards, and 12 Quick Build Cards. Cards are designed for printing, cutting, laminating, and reuse, with four cards per page. Six units provide full-year coverage:

Engineering Design & Innovation: problem definition, solution generation, optimization, trade-offs, technical communication, and innovation pitches.

Matter & Chemical Systems: particles, material properties, conservation of matter, water purification, chemical change, and food preservation.

Energy: solar power, wind turbines, energy storage, renewable-energy systems, and energy grids.

Earth & Space: Earth’s spheres and water, gravity, stars, earthquakes, and Mars habitats.

Ecosystems & Sustainability: matter cycles, ecosystems, resource protection, environmental problem-solving, and sustainability audits.

Technology & Future Solutions: assistive technology, disaster response, sustainable cities, systems thinking, and large-scale optimization.

Every weekly challenge provides a driving question, success criteria, constraints, a realistic client, resource or budget limitations, trial requirements, measurement expectations, prediction prompts, and opportunities to investigate trade-offs.

Students follow an authentic process: predict, design, test, measure, analyze, optimize, and communicate. Level Up Cards add complexity through competing goals rather than simply assigning additional work. Innovator Talk Cards reinforce STEM vocabulary, evidence-based discussion, process thinking, flowcharts, pseudocode, and collaborative roles.

Quick Build Cards provide short, approximately ten-minute activities suitable for morning work, indoor recess, spare time, stations, or substitute plans.

Students practice collecting and analyzing quantitative data, calculating averages, ratios, percentages, and rates, evaluating evidence, working within constraints, communicating technical information, collaborating, and improving solutions through iteration.

The cards emphasize student independence by making expectations visible and encouraging students to judge their designs against evidence and specifications rather than appearance or teacher approval.
