This Grade 5 STEM Full-Year Curriculum provides a rigorous 36-week program designed for students ready to tackle complex, open-ended engineering problems. Students learn to define problems from evidence, research solutions, analyze data, evaluate competing priorities, optimize designs, and communicate technical results.
The curriculum includes 36 engineering projects across six units: Engineering Design & Innovation, Matter & Chemical Systems, Energy, Earth & Space, Ecosystems & Sustainability, and Technology & Future Solutions. Every project follows a 10-step process: Define Problem → Research → Generate Solutions → Evaluate → Prototype → Test → Collect Data → Analyse → Optimise → Communicate.
Students work with authentic budgets, stakeholders, criteria, and constraints while developing and comparing multiple solutions. They conduct controlled tests, record all results including failed trials, calculate means, ratios, percentages, and rates, interpret data, and make evidence-based optimization decisions.
The program includes 24 data investigations, 24 coding activities, six capstone projects, flowcharts, pseudocode, trade-off curves, coordinate-grid and volume applications, plus a complete 36-week pacing guide and standards references.
Each weekly challenge uses approximately 55–60 minute sessions: Define & Research, Generate & Evaluate, Prototype, Test & Collect, and Analyse, Optimise & Communicate. Students repeat the Prototype → Test → Collect → Analyse → Optimise cycle at least twice in regular projects and three times during capstones.
Projects address engaging real-world problems such as water purification, solar-powered devices, wind turbines, earthquake-resistant structures, Mars habitats, closed ecosystems, sustainable cities, assistive technology, and disaster-response systems.
The curriculum aligns with NGSS 3–5 Engineering Design standards, including 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, and 3-5-ETS1-3, along with relevant NGSS, CCSS Math, and CCSS ELA standards. Students develop skills in decimals, fractions, ratios, measurement, volume, coordinate grids, research, writing, collaboration, technical communication, and presentation.
A major focus is optimization and trade-offs. Students learn that improving one performance measure may negatively affect another and must use evidence to determine which solution best meets the priorities.
With common classroom and recycled materials, this resource provides a structured path toward independent STEM innovation, combining engineering, science, mathematics, coding, sustainability, data analysis, research, and technical communication.

Kindergarten runs a simpler four-step routine in shorter sessions. Every challenge has a driving question, criteria, constraints, and a prediction before building; from 2nd Grade up, required trial counts and data to record; from 4th up, a client scenario and a budget. How It Grows, K–5 K: count, compare, build, and try again — Ask · Imagine · Build · Share 1st: change one thing and test again; measure in cm; simple data 2nd: three ideas before choosing; repeated trials; graphs; numbers as evidence 3rd: independent/dependent/controlled variables; fair tests; efficiency; claim–evidence–reasoning; unplugged coding 4th: measurable criteria; budgets and cost per unit; weighted decision matrices; source reliability 5th: trade-offs and optimization; ratios and rates; technical summaries; flowcharts and pseudocode By Week 36 of 5th Grade, students independently define a problem, research it, run the full engineering process, and report a recommendation someone could act on. Format 6 PDF files, 1,074 pages total Teacher-facing lesson plans; print-and-go All challenges use everyday classroom supplies — cups, straws, tape, paper, string, blocks — with a materials list for every challenge and no kit required Teaching duration: 1 full school year per grade Build Out From Here Each curriculum has six companion resources, all built on the same 36-week sequence and unit colors: K–5 STEM Challenge Cards — the student-facing card for every weekly challenge, plus Level Up extensions and Quick Builds K–5 STEM Journals — the student recording pages for every weekly challenge K–5 STEM Projects — the six unit capstones per grade, extended into full team projects, plus 72 mini-projects K–5 STEM Task Cards — 5–10 minute skill practice with answer keys K–5 STEM for Early Finishers — a self-managing routine for independent time K–5 STEM Sub Plans — scripted lessons for absence days All seven, for all six grades, are in the K–5 STEM Mega Bundle.
