A Mousy Mess - Maths Storybook Lesson KS1

Want to introduce and develop a strong understanding of length and measurement with comparison and exploration activities? This is 1 long or 2 shorter lessons with supporting resources to accompany the Maths picture book ‘A Mousy Mess’ by Laura Driscoll from the Mouse Math series.

A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension, Maths and independent investigation, the children will be super engaged with the hands-on and practical length related investigations. A fun way to introduce the concept; this lesson also includes the option to extend learning to the equality/inequality symbols and invites lots of interesting and ponderous discussions about properties and whether there are other ways to measure the size of of an object.

• Poster templates for recording activity
• Cut-out picture templates for recording activity

Additional resources needed:

• The book ‘A Mousy Mess’ by Laura Driscoll (FYI there are YouTube readings if budget is low!)
• A mix of lego or duple bricks
• Sorting hoops or buckets
• Pencils/glue-sticks/scissors
