This product reviews adverbs and then focusses on adverbial phrases. It deals with grouping adverbials of manner, time and frequency, place, purpose/reason and adverbials of degree/intensity. Presentation explains how adverbial phrases act as adverbs in a sentence. Also includes fronted adverbials.

Learning objectives and success criteria are included in the lesson.

The presentation starts with a quick review of adverbs and their grouping.

Worksheets

  1. Adverbs and Adverbial Phrases Sort (1) and (2) – Students sort the adverbs and adverbial phrases under the correct headings.

  2. Worksheet – Tasks A and B: Match Up activity. Students draw lines to match up a sentence to a suitable adverbial phrase.

  3. Worksheet – Using Adverbials (1) – Students write the beginning of their sentences and then tick any of the eight adverbial phrases to finish off. An example is given on the worksheet.

  4. Worksheet – Using Adverbials (2) – This worksheet follows on from Adverbials (1) in that students rewrite their sentence but place the adverbial phrase at the beginning remembering to use the comma.

  5. Worksheets (2 pages): More exercises on writing fronted adverbials.

Extra worksheets
6. Tell Us More worksheets: Students are presented with 8 simple sentences for students to develop into interesting sentences giving more information. E.g. Basic sentence: Peter got up.

Challenge: Reading story text and completing associated tasks. Also includes comprehension questions - retrieving information, inference, identifying, vocabulary work and creative writing.
