What’s included?
This download includes x3 pdfs, portrait in colour each featuring ten/five images that all begin with one sound - a, e, i, o, u.

What’s it for?
This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme).

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds.

How to use it?
An adult should print each sheet, ideally onto card, and cut along the dotted lines to separate the letter pieces from the images. Instructions for cutting are included on each sheet.

This activity is a two-part matching puzzle. Learners will match each image with its corresponding initial letter sound. Each letter piece is uniquely shaped to fit only the correct image.

Resource Details
This particular sheet is part of the ‘Red Set’ and focuses on the letters s, a, t, p, i, n. This is a fun and engaging way for learners to become more familiar with these letters and their initial sounds. Other letter sets in this same design are also available.

The images chosen all have a clear initial letter sound, but the words themselves cannot be easily sounded out. The cross in the top right corner of each image indicates that the activity’s sole purpose is to identify the beginning letter sound, not to sound out the entire word.

Resource layout
The font used is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size.
