What’s included?
This download includes two A4, landscape pdf sheets, one with ‘circular’ shaped (paper/card) beads, the other with ‘square’ shaped (paper/card) beads.

What’s it for?
This activity helps learners practise putting the alphabet in order and matching uppercase and lowercase letters.

While working on it, learners will also develop their fine motor skills and become more familiar with the alphabet. As they thread the beads, learners will need to decide whether to use an uppercase or lowercase letter and consider which letter comes next in the sequence.

This is a great activity to keep learners busy and working independently.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.

Resource Details
This resource is a set of 54 circular or square beads that each feature both an uppercase and a lowercase letter. The beads are arranged in six rows and nine columns and are laid out in rainbow order to help guide and motivate learners in finding the next number (and colour) in the pattern.

How to Use It

  • Cutting: Dotted guidelines show where to cut and punch a hole in each bead.
  • Hole Punch: The recommended hole punch size is 5mm, but you can use a smaller one to make the activity more challenging and improve your learners’ fine motor skills.
  • ’k’ Versions: Two different versions of the letter ‘k’ are included to accommodate different font styles learners may be familiar with.
  • Threading: Learners will need providing with a knotted length of string/wool, ribbon, or pipe cleaner to thread the beads onto.

Suggestions
For a more durable finish, we recommend printing the beads onto card. This will make it easier for learners to sort and thread them without damage.

While circular beads are visually appealing, the square beads are quicker to prepare as they only require straight cuts. For the most efficient method to prepare the square beads, follow these steps:

  • Cut the sheet into long strips, each containing a single row of nine shapes.
  • Punch the holes along each of these strips.
  • Cut along the dotted lines to separate the individual beads.

If learners find it difficult to put the letters in alphabetical order, give them a reference sheet with both uppercase and lowercase letters to use as a guide.
