Want to find a fun, cross-curricular way to teach long multiplication? This lesson fuses together the history of school and games in the Ancient Egyptian times with the key maths concept of long multiplication.
After an input that includes information about schools and games in Ancient Egypt, the children are introduced to the game Senet.
Senet is a popular ancient Egyptian board game, symbolising the soul’s journey through the afterlife and played on a 30-square board. Blending luck with strategy, it is a fantastic game to play with children outside of Maths to build those soft skills like problem solving and reasoning.
Following this, the children are given a recap on short multiplication, and then taken through how to multiply two 2-digit numbers together by using long multiplication. After the input, children can play the modified game of Senet, altered to include practising short or long multiplication.
A fantastic introduction to long multiplication and the addictive game of Senet, which works particularly well if also studying the Ancient Egyptians!
