A complete, ready-to-teach AQA A Level PE lesson on measuring rotation: radians, angular displacement, angular velocity and angular acceleration, with modelled calculations.

How do we measure how fast a gymnast is rotating? This lesson gives students the definitions, units and calculations for angular motion that the AQA specification requires (7582, 3.2.2.4) — and makes the maths feel manageable, using the somersault, the discus and the high bar.

Every angular quantity is taught alongside its linear partner, which students retrieve in the Do Now. The radian is made physical with a Feel It activity where students turn on the spot through 1.57 rad, 3.14 rad and finally one radian (1 rad = 57.3°), before converting between degrees and radians.

Calculations follow a strict I do → We do → You do structure (formula → substitute → calculate → unit):

  • Angular velocity on the high bar (handstand to hang)
  • A diver’s quarter turn — with the classic “forgot to convert to radians” trap built in
  • Angular acceleration of a discus thrower across the circle
  • Independent practice, a rearrangement challenge and a deceleration extension

Misconceptions are tackled head-on: angular distance vs angular displacement, spot-the-error student answers, and a hinge question on constant angular velocity. The lesson closes with a multi-part exam question (definition, calculation and a synoptic link back to torque and Newton’s second law) with mark-by-mark feedback.

What’s included

  • Teacher PowerPoint (22 slides) built on the Exam Vista teaching framework, with detailed speaker notes including every answer and common error
  • Student Workbook (7 A4 pages, editable Word) — conversion tables, calculation frames, spot-the-error and exam practice
  • Teacher Answer Version — an exact copy of the workbook with every answer and worked calculation in green

Lesson sequence

Do Now retrieval (linear motion) • Learning outcomes & key terms • Turn & Talk hook: who rotates faster? • The radian • Feel It: turn through the radians • Converting degrees and radians • Angular displacement (vs angular distance) • Angular velocity • I Do: high bar • We Do: diver’s quarter turn • Angular acceleration • I Do: discus • Show Me: units • You Do calculations • Cold Call: spot the error • Hinge question • Everybody Writes: what the numbers mean for performance • Exam practice • Right is Right mark scheme • Exit ticket

AQA A Level PE Biomechanics – Angular Motion | Complete 3-Lesson Bundle + Workbooks & Answers

Teach the complete AQA A Level PE Angular Motion topic with this fully resourced 3-lesson biomechanics bundle. Designed specifically around the AQA A Level PE specification and exam demands, the sequence takes students from the foundations of torque and Newton’s laws of angular motion through to moment of inertia, angular momentum and their application to sporting performance. The bundle includes 3 complete teacher PowerPoints, alongside student workbooks and teacher answer workbooks, giving you a ready-to-teach sequence with retrieval practice, explicit instruction, worked examples, practical ‘Feel It’ activities, checking for understanding and exam-style application throughout. Lesson 1 – Torque & Newton’s Laws of Angular Motion Develops understanding of torque, including Torque = Force × perpendicular distance, before applying Newton’s three laws to angular sporting movements. Lesson 2 – Angular Motion Principles Develops the key principles and sporting applications needed to bridge torque and rotational movement with the more advanced angular-motion concepts. Lesson 3 – Moment of Inertia & Angular Momentum Explores moment of inertia, angular velocity and angular momentum (L = I × ω), including conservation of angular momentum, body position during rotation, calculations, graph interpretation and extended exam practice. Across the three lessons, students progress from AO1 knowledge → AO2 sporting application → AO3 analysis, with sporting examples, visual models and structured exam practice designed to make one of the more challenging areas of A Level biomechanics easier to understand. Included - 3 complete teacher PowerPoints - Student workbooks - Teacher answer workbooks - Practical demonstrations and ‘Feel It’ activities - Worked calculations and modelling - Retrieval and hinge questions - AO1, AO2 and AO3 application - Exam-style questions and model answers Ideal for first teaching, revision or independent study of AQA A Level PE Angular Motion. Exam Vista – clear teaching, purposeful application and exam-focused practice.
