This resource is a diagnostic knowledge check for the Biodiversity Conservation and Life Processes sections of the AQA A-level Environmental Science specification.
It is designed to help students and teachers identify gaps in understanding after teaching the Living Environment content on conservation of biodiversity and life processes in the biosphere. The questions are original and structured to assess recall, application and skills/data analysis.
The knowledge check covers:
• the value of biodiversity to humans and ecosystems
• resources provided by biodiversity, including timber, fibres, oils, fuels, foods, medicines and genetic resources
• the importance of conserving species that have not yet been fully investigated
• biomimicry, medicines, crop genes and future biological resources
• ecosystem services and their interactions
• how humans influence biodiversity
• direct exploitation, habitat destruction, pollution and introduced species
• biodiversity loss on oceanic islands
• conservation priorities and IUCN criteria
• endemic species, threatened species, keystone species and flagship species
• habitat conservation and protected areas
• habitat area, shape, fragmentation and biological corridors
• ecological niches and habitat requirements
• abiotic and biotic factors affecting species survival
• succession, climax communities and plagioclimax management
• management methods such as grazing, mowing, burning, coppicing and pollarding
• ecological monitoring and the use of new technologies
The resource includes:
• Section A: Recall questions
• Section B: Application questions
• Section C: Skills and data analysis
• full teacher mark scheme
• specification point mapping for each question
• maths and working scientifically links where relevant
• diagnostic notes for teachers
This resource is suitable for:
• AQA A-level Environmental Science students
• end-of-topic review
• retrieval practice
• diagnostic assessment
• Paper 2 revision
• identifying misconceptions and gaps before assessment
