Area and Perimeter: 6 Reasoning Sessions

Help pupils explain what area and perimeter measure, then use that understanding in comparisons, error analysis and constrained design tasks.

Six teaching sessions include worked models, rectangles and compound shapes, comparisons with equal area or perimeter, incorrect solutions to discuss, and a planting-bed design. An independent check and reasoned teacher answers are included.

Includes a 22-page A4 teacher-and-pupil PDF plus a separate 16-page pupil extract. British English. The two files contain the same pupil activities; they are convenient printing alternatives, not extra lessons.

Suggested ages 9–12, guided by prior knowledge rather than a national year-group mapping. Pupils need whole-number addition, simple multiplication and the ability to read stated measurements. The shapes are models with supplied units: pupils should not measure the printout.
