This PowerPoint illustrates a practical application for area calculations of triangles and quadrilaterals, (my students respond well when they can identify a real-world purpose for topics).
After suggesting reasons for needing to find areas, it explains dividing an area of land with irregular shape, into measurable triangles and quadrilaterals, then calculating the total area.
Next a question that can be worked as a whole class or used as a second example.
Concluding with 3 questions that students can work from the smart board display or are included here as a worksheet (2 copies on a single A4).
