This PowerPoint is a gentle introduction to area, it asks students to use the displayed alphabet to write their name on grid paper (1cm or 5mm) then count the squares used and convert this to area. The word MATHS is used as example of calculation. The letters are reproduced in black on the included word document, 3 times on A4, so avoiding having to move back through the PowerPoint when used again. The second application is producing a Sky message, this has squares measuring 30cm x 30cm each therefore representing 0.09 sq. m. My students responded really well to this activity, enthusiasm and volume of work completed much greater than shown for standard text exercises.
