This lesson assesses the rapid development of weapons during the Cold War in the aftermath of the Second World War.
Students investigate how advances in military technology, particularly nuclear weapons, transformed international relations and created new fears for people around the world.
The lesson begins with a powerful video examining the devastating impact of the atomic bomb. Students then complete a differentiated colour-coded worksheet, supported by challenge questions, to describe and explain the development of the nuclear arms race between the USA and the USSR.
Students are encouraged to analyse key facts, figures and statistics, interpreting evidence to understand the scale of nuclear expansion during the Cold War.
A range of activities, including keyword tasks and source analysis exercises, help to develop historical knowledge and critical thinking skills, with scaffolding and support provided where required.
To consolidate learning, students take part in an exciting and interactive plenary activity: an arms ‘race’ board game featuring dice and bomb counters, designed to reinforce key concepts in a memorable and enjoyable way
.
At the heart of this lesson is the overarching enquiry question:Why did civilians fear for their lives during the Cold War?Students continue to build their enquiry journey by adding to a mind map or enquiry record each lesson. Ideas can be recorded in different colours or dates, allowing students to track their developing understanding of how nations and individuals responded to living in a nuclear age.
