Why This Keeps Happening

Children who mix up b and d aren’t being careless — most can already tell you “b” says buh and “d” says duh. The problem isn’t knowledge; it’s retrieval under pressure: when writing at speed, the brain can’t always pull up the right shape fast enough, so the wrong one goes down before there’s time to think it through.

The usual fixes — the “bed” trick, the b-hand method, repeated correction — all share the same flaw: they ask the child to retrieve the correct answer from memory, which is exactly what’s failing. A strategy that depends on the broken thing can’t fix the broken thing.

A Different Approach

Instead of training faster retrieval, this programme removes the need to retrieve at all. A visual cue card — with a picture built into each letter shape and a clear starting point for formation — sits permanently on the desk. Before writing, a glance is all it takes. No recall under pressure, no guessing.

The Dyslexic Logic Font is used throughout, by permission, to help pupils internalise the correct shape.
