This 6-week basketball unit is designed to develop student’s fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and understanding of basic basketball principles through fun, engaging, and progressive lessons. Suitable for Years 3-6, each lesson includes clear learning objectives, dynamic warm-ups, skill-based activities, game-related progressions, and safety considerations.
The lessons gradually build from individual ball-handling and movement skills to small-sided games that promote teamwork, communication, and fair play. Activities are differentiated to cater to varying skill levels across the age range, ensuring inclusion and challenge for all learners.
Structure of Each Lesson

Clearly state what students should achieve by the end of the lesson (e.g., dribbling control, passing accuracy, understanding of space and teamwork).
Warm-Up:
A fun and active warm-up that promotes physical readiness and introduces key basketball movements such as running, dodging, pivoting, and coordination.
Main Activities:
Skill-focused drills and challenges that build technical ability - for example, dribbling relays, passing circuits, shooting games, or defensive stance activities.
Progressions:
Differentiated extensions or adaptations that increase difficulty or add tactical elements, allowing students to apply skills in more game-like contexts.
Game Application:
Small-sided games (e.g., 3v3 or 4v4) that encourage students to apply skills in real situations, develop decision-making, and understand the rules of basketball.
