For teachers in British Columbia, Canada (Grades 4 to 7). Write your BC Learning Updates and Summary of Learning faster, without sounding like a template. Choose Emerging, Developing, Proficient or Extending for ELA and Math, and the picker writes a concise comment for each student: a strength, a next step with a clear strategy, and (if you like) one way families can help at home.

What’s inside:

  • 254 ELA and Math comments for Grades 4 to 7: 8 ELA focus areas (comprehension, literature, research and information texts, writing process, conventions, vocabulary, speaking and presenting, critical thinking and perspectives) and 10 Math focus areas (number sense, multiplication and division facts, computing with whole numbers and decimals, fractions decimals and percent, patterns and equations, measurement, geometry, data and probability, financial literacy, reasoning and communicating)
  • 36 “ways to support at home” lines for families
  • 42 Core Competencies lines (communicating, collaborating, creative thinking, critical and reflective thinking, personal awareness, positive identity, social responsibility)
  • 32 subject openers, 111 openings and closings for Learning Update 1, Learning Update 2 and the Summary of Learning (Positive, Steady and Supportive tone), with secondary-school closings for Grade 7
  • 20 neutral lines for Insufficient Evidence (IE), English Language Learners and tools and supports
  • The comment picker for 40 students (Excel .xlsx; opens in Google Sheets) + a PDF of every comment with character counts

Why it helps:

  • Levels, not letter grades: every line is written for the four-point scale, and Emerging lines say what the student can do now and what helps next
  • Grade-aware: Grade 5-7, 6-7 and Grade 7 topics (slides and flips, volume and angles, ratio and percent, order of operations, the coordinate grid, persuasion, integers, circles, bias) only appear for those grades, and you can switch off any focus area you did not teach this term
  • Paragraph or bullet style, character or word counter with your own limit, red when a comment is too long
  • Different wording for each student: classmates with the same levels usually get different sentences
  • Canadian spelling, plain language for parents and caregivers, third person, pronoun-free bank (optional He/She column)
  • Works offline in Excel and Google Sheets: no add-ons, no sign-ins, student names stay in your copy

Written for the BC K-12 Student Reporting Policy and the four-point Provincial Proficiency Scale, Grades 4 to 7. Teaching a 3/4 split? The BC Report Comments K-3 Proficiency Scale pack and the K-7 bundle are in the Diya & Dot shop.
