Bring the seaside into your classroom with Beachcomber, a nature based learning resource exploring shapes, counting, patterns and marine life through engaging activities.
Beachcomber from Heart & Home Education is a colourful, hands on resource designed to encourage children to explore, observe and discover the wonders of the coast. Featuring detailed seaside photographs and simple challenges, it supports early maths, scientific curiosity, concentration and careful observation.
The resource includes five activities.
Shape Edition invites children to search a pebble beach for triangles, hearts, squares, rectangles and banana shapes, developing shape recognition and visual discrimination.
Number Edition challenges children to count sea anemones, starfish, sea urchins, limpets and edible crabs in a vibrant rock pool scene.
Pattern Edition asks children to complete repeating colour patterns featuring winkles on an anchor and brittle stars on the seabed, encouraging sequencing and logical thinking.
Exploring Edition encourages close observation as children search among whelk shells to find hidden hermit crabs.
Odd One Out Edition invites children to spot the different creature in groups of prawns, limpets, starfish, crabs and sea urchins.
Ideal for EYFS, KS1, home education and outdoor learning, Beachcomber can be used for independent activities, adult supported exploration, seaside topics, classroom provision or as a follow up to a beach visit.
Children practise counting, sorting, pattern recognition, shape identification and problem solving while building vocabulary about coastal creatures and their habitats. The realistic imagery encourages discussion, curiosity and a greater appreciation of the natural world.
A versatile, screen free resource for teachers, teaching assistants, parents and home educators looking to make early learning engaging and meaningful.
