A practical staff governor toolkit designed to help school staff understand their governance role, maintain appropriate boundaries and contribute confidently and strategically to the work of the governing board.

Being a staff governor brings a particular set of opportunities and challenges. Staff governors have valuable first-hand knowledge of their school, but they are not representatives of the staff. They need to be able to separate operational knowledge from strategic governance, manage relationships with colleagues and senior leaders, maintain confidentiality and ask appropriate questions.

What is included?

  1. Staff Governor Induction Checklist
A structured guide to getting established in the role, covering what to do before the first meeting, during the first month, throughout the first term and on an ongoing basis.

  2. Understanding Your Boundaries
Practical ‘Don’t / Instead’ guidance covering staff representation, individual employment concerns, staffroom conversations, confidentiality, operational involvement and conflicts of interest.

  3. Two Roles, Clear Boundaries: Managing Staff Relationships
Guidance for navigating relationships with colleagues and senior leaders, including suggested responses for some of the difficult conversations staff governors may encounter.

  4. From Staff Knowledge to Strategic Questions
A practical guide to turning day-to-day knowledge of the school into appropriate strategic challenge. Includes operational-to-strategic question examples and ready-to-use questions covering educational performance, safeguarding, attendance and behaviour, SEND and inclusion, finance, resources, staffing and strategic improvement.

  5. Checking the Minutes: A Staff Governor’s Guide
A straightforward checklist explaining what governors should look for when reviewing governing board minutes, including decisions, actions, challenge, accuracy and confidentiality.

  6. Staff Governor Scenarios: What Would You Do?
Eight realistic scenarios exploring situations where staff and governance roles can overlap. Each scenario includes points to consider and guidance on an appropriate response.

  7. Questions to Ask Your Chair and Governance Professional
A practical conversation sheet covering board priorities, expectations, working practices, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, training and development.

  8. Staff Governor Reflection and Development Tool
A landscape self-assessment and action-planning resource to help staff governors reflect on their confidence, identify development priorities and agree their next steps.

Who is this resource for?

The toolkit is suitable for staff governors in primary, secondary and special schools. It is particularly useful for governors beginning the role but can also support established staff governors who want to review their practice and development.
