Beginning Sounds and Symbols

Beginning Sounds and Symbols is a practical KS1 phonics resource pack designed to support children, including pupils with SEND, in developing early literacy, handwriting and pencil-control skills.
The resource contains 25 worksheets and a blank template, which teachers or children can use to create their own personalised activity sheet.
Using licensed Boardmaker symbols, each worksheet provides clear visual support while reinforcing links between phonics, initial sounds, the alphabet, letter formation and handwriting.
Children can trace over the letters positioned around the edge of each page, identify and write the initial sound for each symbol, and colour the pictures to add a fine-motor element.
Every sheet is different, with several linked to familiar themes such as clothing, weather, toys, transport and food, making the activities easy to connect to classroom topics and everyday vocabulary.
The worksheets are suitable for independent work, small-group phonics sessions, interventions, continuous provision or additional practice for children who benefit from a structured, visual approach to learning.
