The aim of this lesson is to understand the causes behind the building of the Berlin Wall and the consequences for Berliners.
Students begin by investigating the contrasting experiences of life in East and West Berlin, analysing why so many East Germans chose to cross into the West in search of greater opportunities and freedoms.
Through a range of source-based activities, learners develop a secure understanding of the growing tensions that led to the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
The second part of the lesson explores the impact and significance of the Wall through statistics, graffiti art and the powerful personal story of Conrad Schumann.
Using a thinking quilt activity, students evaluate the reasons for the Wall’s construction and consider its wider significance within the context of the Cold War.
Designed to be engaging, challenging and accessible, the lesson encourages students to think critically about the human impact of political decisions and the realities of living in a divided city.
The lesson also contributes to the wider enquiry question, “Why did civilians fear for their lives?” Students revisit this theme throughout the unit, recording and developing their ideas over time to build a deeper understanding of how individuals and nations responded to the tensions of the nuclear age.
