A full 60–75 minute contemporary dance lesson using blindfolded sensory exploration to generate original movement, with a detailed safety protocol.
Full description:
Sight is the sense most dancers default to for spatial orientation, timing, and copying movement — which means it’s also the sense most likely to be quietly limiting their creativity. This lesson removes it. By working blindfolded (or eyes-closed, for students who prefer not to use a physical blindfold), students generate movement from proprioception, touch, sound and instinct instead of visual habit or self-consciousness, producing material that genuinely surprises them and, often, you.
Because blindfolded work carries real physical risk, this resource leads with a full, explicit safety protocol — covering space clearance, pair/small-group systems, a rehearsed stop signal, boundary marking, contraindication checks, and verbal check-ins — so you can run the session with confidence even if you’ve never taught sensory-constraint work before.
The lesson itself moves through a trust-building warm-up, four blindfolded sensory tasks (Listening Body, Touch as Choreographer, Negative Space Mapping, and Weight and Support), a guided reconstruction phase where students bring their discoveries back into sighted, controlled phrase work, and a full sharing and discussion section with exam-relevant reflection questions (directly applicable to GCSE-style AO3/AO4 written responses). Extension ideas include a group “sculpting” version, turning the session’s ambient sounds into a sound score, and a written reflection task linking sensory constraint to choreographic strategy.
What’s included:
• A full, explicit safety protocol — essential reading before running any blindfolded session
• A trust-building partner warm-up
• 4 fully-explained blindfolded sensory tasks with guide/mover instructions
• A structured reconstruction phase bringing discoveries back into a sighted, controlled phrase
• Sharing and discussion questions, including exam-relevant reflection prompts
• 3 extension ideas and a dedicated Notes for Teachers section
Ideal for: KS3/4 contemporary dance units on creativity and stimulus, GCSE Dance classes needing strong AO3/AO4 reflection material, and any teacher wanting a genuinely different, high-impact stimulus lesson.
Format: Fully editable Word document, ready to print or project. Requires blindfolds or eye masks (or eyes-closed as a lower-risk alternative) and a cleared, open working space.
