This bundle of PowerPoints covers the Standard Level content of Topic 2.3 The Metallic Model for IBDP Chemistry (first examination 2025). It provides a clear, structured explanation of metallic bonding, metallic structure and the physical properties of metals, fully aligned to the updated syllabus.
The metallic model describes metals as a lattice of positive metal cations held together by a “sea” of delocalised valence electrons. This electrostatic attraction between cations and mobile electrons explains key metallic properties such as electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, malleability and ductility. Across the lessons, students build understanding from the basic definition of metallic bonding to explaining trends in melting point, hardness and conductivity using ionic radius, ionic charge and electron density.
The bundle includes:
• Metallic Bonding and Structure – definition of metallic bonding, crystalline lattices, the free electron model, comparison with ionic and covalent bonding
• Strength of the Metallic Bond – factors affecting bond strength, trends down groups and across periods, links to melting point and hardness
• Physical Properties and Applications of Metals – malleability, ductility, electrical and thermal conductivity, real-world applications and data use
Each PowerPoint includes starter activities, key word definitions, clear explanations, diagrams, mini-whiteboard checks and structured practice questions with answers. There are also links to real data (e.g. NIST alloy database) and contextual examples such as aluminium recycling to support applications and CAS-style discussion.
This resource is ideal for teaching, consolidation or revision of SL metallic bonding.
File types included: Multiple PowerPoint files (.pptx)
Last updated: January 2026 – improved sequencing, clarified exam wording and strengthened links between structure and property explanations.
