Calculating with Time is a complete Year 7 Core maths lesson built around a clear I Do–We Do–You Do sequence and aligned to the mathematical scope of Sparx M627.

The lesson teaches pupils to calculate durations, finish times and start times using hours and minutes, with deliberate progression through crossing an hour, crossing noon and crossing midnight. Timelines and bridging through convenient hours make the structure visible without turning the task into decimal subtraction.

Included:

  • retrieval starter with complete answers;
  • key vocabulary and a clear timeline representation;
  • explicit teacher modelling and three matched We Do questions;
  • exactly 12 AFL mini-whiteboard checks, each followed immediately by its answer;
  • substantial 24-question structured practice using controlled variation;
  • one-slide tiered practice with 8 Developing, 8 Secure and 4 Greater Depth questions;
  • precise error analysis, comparison and constrained construction tasks;
  • a sustained Super Challenge with a complete solution;
  • misconception checks, problem solving, challenge and exam-style questions;
  • exit check and full answers throughout.

The resource is an editable, standalone and print-free PowerPoint designed for whole-class projection. Routine answers are consolidated to keep the classroom sequence efficient, while worked solutions include units and reasoning where needed.
