A one-hour behaviour and de-escalation CPD session you can run yourself on an INSET day or in a staff briefing, with no outside trainer and no video to buy.
Most rough moments in a classroom have a heat source: a loud room, a sudden change, a hungry child, a child who is lost in the work and would rather look bad than look stupid. The Calm the Room Method gives staff four steps that work across EYFS to post-16: Read the room, Own your calm, Offer a Calm Move, Mend and reconnect. It is about the adult’s calm. It does not replace your behaviour policy, your safeguarding procedures, or what the SENCo and a pupil’s EHCP or SEN Support plan already set out.
What’s in the zip
- 20 editable PowerPoint slides (and a PDF copy) with speaker notes on every slide
- A timed facilitator script, so anyone on SLT, the SENCo or a lead teacher can lead it
- Four 15-minute modules if you would rather spread it over four staff briefings
- A one-page whole-school rollout guide with a 4-week plan
- Scenario guides by key stage: 20 realistic moments for EYFS and KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and sixth form, plus a set for TAs, lunchtime and break duty staff
- Handouts: the Heat Scale (handout and poster), Know Your Default self-check, Calm Moves cards, Say This, Not That, 8 practice scenario strips, a reflection sheet, exit tickets, a before-and-after staff self-check, a sign-in sheet and an editable certificate of attendance for CPD records
The scenarios are the bit staff talk about afterwards. Wet break with thirty children and one table. A Year 8 who will not put the phone away because “my mum might text”. A Year 13 asleep in period 3 because they work nights. A TA working one-to-one when the pupil shuts down. Each one shows what you see, how to read the room, what your calm looks like, a Calm Move to offer, how to mend, and what not to do.
Who it is for
Teachers, TAs, cover supervisors, lunchtime staff and nursery staff. Works in mainstream, special schools, alternative provision and FE.
Please note
This is training on calm, preventative adult responses. It does not teach physical intervention and is not a substitute for your school’s crisis plan or for accredited training. If anyone is ever in danger, get help and follow your school or setting’s safety plan.
