The aim of this lesson is to assess the consequences of overstocking the open range and the subsequent transition towards smaller ranches following the Great Die-Up of 1886–87.
Students tackle GCSE exam-style questions from the outset, exploring the reasons for changes within the cattle industry and their consequences. They investigate the impact of barbed wire, the decline of the cattle drives and the changing nature of ranching in the American West. A model answer is provided to support their exam technique and understanding.
Students also analyse how these developments affected cowboys and ranchers, including the reasons for the declining demand for cowboys.
There is also a challenging chronology activity in which students identify which developments took place before and after 1887, helping them understand the significant changes in direction for the cattle industry.
The plenary is a summarising pyramid, requiring students to demonstrate and consolidate what they have learnt during the lesson.
The resource includes suggested teaching strategies and differentiated materials and comes in PowerPoint format, id there is a wish to edit and change.
