Pupils will explore how Christmas is celebrated in different countries, investigating how climate, culture, religion and local history influence festive traditions. They will discover examples such as Christmas markets in Germany, Las Posadas in Mexico, Saint Lucia celebrations in Sweden and summer Christmas traditions in Australia. Through maps, photographs, information cards and discussion, pupils will compare decorations, foods, music and activities with Christmas celebrations in Scotland. They will also recognise that Christmas is not celebrated by everyone and that traditions vary within countries and families.
Key learning questions:
- How is Christmas celebrated in different countries?
- How does climate influence Christmas traditions?
- What foods, decorations and customs are associated with different places?
- How are Christmas traditions similar to or different from those in Scotland?
Expected outcome: Pupils can locate selected countries on a map and describe similarities and differences between Christmas traditions around the world.
