This engaging lesson introduces students to the 14 standard circuit diagram symbols that are shown on the AQA GCSE specification. The PowerPoint has been designed to cover point 2.1.1 of the AQA GCSE Physics and Combined Science specifications, and is specifically written for those students who will take the foundation tier.

A variety of tasks, including quick quiz competitions, are used to reveal the symbols for the switch (open and closed), cell, battery, diode, resistor, variable resistor, LED, lamp, fuse, voltmeter, ammeter, thermistor, and LDR.

Brief introductions to the functions of some of the components are provided, but this is primarily covered in the following lesson, titled “Function of the key electrical components”.

As described above, this lesson has been written for foundation tier students and is expected to be covered in a lesson ranging between 45 minutes and an hour. It is the 1st lesson in a series of 12 lessons which have been planned to cover the main content of topic P2.
