This resource is a structured peer coaching activity designed to support pupils in revising place value through talk, collaboration and active engagement. Based on the Rally Coach approach (Kagan structure), it encourages children to work in pairs, taking turns to solve problems and coach one another.

One pupil solves a question while their partner takes on the role of coach, supporting by asking questions, checking understanding and guiding thinking. Pupils then swap roles, ensuring both learners are actively involved. Coaching prompts such as “Can you explain how you got that answer?” and "Let’s check it by…” help to deepen understanding and promote mathematical reasoning.

Each strip contains six questions and can be easily prepared by simply cutting the page in half. The resource includes four different ability levels to support differentiation, as well as some unleveled strips for flexible use. A blank template is also included, allowing you to add your own numbers tailored to the needs of your learners.

This resource works well as a baseline, assessment, revision or independent challenge. It encourages purposeful talk, supports peer learning and helps pupils take ownership of their understanding in a supportive and engaging way.
