Build confidence with combining transformations using this editable Year 10 Maths Foundation lesson. Pupils track successive images, compare transformation orders and identify equivalent single transformations.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• One editable 86-slide PowerPoint with answers.
• Six retrieval questions and six prerequisite questions, with grouped answers.
• Lesson vocabulary, translation vectors and equivalent transformations.
• Three modelling pages: 18 examples arranged in nine matched I Do / We Do pairs, with worked solutions and coordinate grids.
• Twenty individual AFL questions, each followed immediately by its answer.
• Thirty-six whole-class practice questions on one slide, with answers together on the next.
• One differentiated page containing six Developing, four Secure and four Greater Depth questions, plus a clearly separated Super Challenge.
• Grouped differentiated answers and illustrated challenge explanations.
• Four misconception checks, an original six-mark exam-style task and three exit-ticket questions, all with answers.
MODELLING ACROSS THE TRANSFORMATIONS
The first modelling page covers successive translations, reflections and rotations. The second combines reflections with translations, translations with rotations, and enlargements with translations. The third introduces further combinations using reflection in y = x and centres away from the origin. Matched examples use different starting coordinates. Worked solutions show intermediate and final images, with colour-coded diagrams to support explanation.
SUBSTANTIAL WHOLE-CLASS PRACTICE
Pupils restart from the same point and apply two transformations in the stated order. Three columns cover reflection followed by translation, translation followed by rotation, and enlargement followed by translation. Small changes in movement help pupils notice which coordinates change and why. All 36 answers appear on one page for efficient feedback.
DIFFERENTIATION WITH PURPOSE
Developing combines transformations of a point. Secure tracks both images of a triangle, including reflection in a shifted mirror line and rotation about a non-origin centre. Greater Depth asks pupils to find an equivalent enlargement, identify invariant points and explain when reversing the order does or does not change the result.
ONE SUPER CHALLENGE
Pupils reflect and translate a triangle, reverse the order, explain the different outcomes and describe both combinations as single reflections. The challenge sits below a divider on the whole-class differentiated page.
PRINT FREE AND FLEXIBLE
Project the lesson while pupils record coordinates and explanations in exercise books or on mini whiteboards. Supplied solution and AFL grids support discussion without pupils having to copy coordinate grids. Compact modelling instructions leave teacher working space. Adapt the editable slides to your class.
