Develop confident statistical comparisons with this editable 79-slide Year 10 Higher PowerPoint. Pupils compare populations using box plots and cumulative frequency graphs, support their conclusions with medians and interquartile ranges, and explain what summary diagrams cannot reveal.
Created by Beyond Printables for Year 10, Unit 27, Higher, U507: Comparing Populations Using Box Plots and Cumulative Frequency Graphs.
THE MATHEMATICS
The lesson covers typical values, lower and upper quartiles, interquartile range, full range, consistency and interpreting comparisons in context. Pupils compare cumulative frequency graphs with equal and unequal sample sizes, using each sample’s own quartile positions. They consider competing priorities, the effect of adding a constant to every value and the evidence required before generalising from samples to populations.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• Six retrieval questions and answers.
• Six prerequisite questions and answers.
• A six-example I Do / We Do overview with matched pairs.
• Larger paired modelling for box plots and cumulative frequency graphs, with explained solutions.
• Explicit modelling of different sample sizes and a clear comparison-writing method.
• Twenty individual AFL question-and-answer pairs with visible diagrams.
• Eight minimally different practice comparisons and answers.
• A self-contained one-page differentiated task: six Developing, six Secure and four Greater Depth questions, plus the full Super Challenge and extension.
• Larger differentiated activity pages and explained answers.
• Six further cumulative frequency comparison questions with worked answers.
• A substantial dataset-construction investigation across two larger question pages, with three pages of explained solutions.
• A six-mark exam-style task and worked answer.
• Three individual exit checks with answers.
A SUBSTANTIAL SUPER CHALLENGE
Pupils construct datasets with identical five-number summaries but different proportions of journeys meeting a 12-minute deadline. They prove the minimum and maximum possible counts, compare means and write evidence-based advice. The compact differentiated page includes the starting data, quartile convention, all six investigation tasks and a further construction extension.
PRINT-FREE TEACHING
Display the diagrams and questions directly. Use mini whiteboards for AFL and exercise books for calculations, explanations and dataset construction. No worksheets need to be printed. Choose the compact differentiated page or the larger activities to suit the class. The lesson remains editable.
