A Christmas-themed Object-Oriented Programming project for A-Level Computer Science, designed to help students develop confidence with classes, objects, methods and program design.
This resource provides a substantial Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) project in which students build a software model of the North Pole. Santa hires elves to make presents, children complete good and bad deeds, naughty and nice lists are maintained, and presents are created and delivered according to the rules of the system.
The project is ideal for developing students’ ability to move beyond small isolated class exercises and work with multiple interacting classes in a larger program.
The resource package includes:
• Full student instructions and project specification
• Starter code to give students an appropriate structure to work from
• Test code to help students check whether their implementation works correctly
• A possible completed solution
The project develops a wide range of important programming skills, including:
• Object-Oriented Programming
• Classes and objects
• Attributes and methods
• Object interaction
• Lists and collections
• Searching
• Sorting
• Selection and iteration
• String processing
• Randomisation
• Decomposition
• Testing and debugging
• Translating a written specification into working code
The scenario also introduces some useful problem-solving challenges. Students must, for example, determine which children belong on the naughty or nice list, calculate the number of presents required, find an elf who has not yet reached their production limit, and distribute presents correctly.
This resource could be used as:
• An A-Level programming project
• A structured introduction to larger OOP programs
• A consolidation activity after teaching classes and objects
• A Christmas-themed end-of-term programming challenge
• Independent programming practice
• Homework or extension work
• Preparation for programming questions in A-Level examinations
The project is particularly useful for helping students see how individual classes work together as part of a complete software system, rather than treating OOP concepts as isolated programming exercises.
Suitable for A-Level Computer Science students studying Object-Oriented Programming, including those following AQA, OCR or other UK specifications.
A fun but substantial programming challenge that gives students meaningful practice applying OOP techniques while modelling the workings of Santa’s North Pole workshop.
